Stepping Forward places specific emphasis on the young person’s emotional and developmental maturity as well as the extent, nature and precursors of the behaviour in order to maximise the benefits to the individual and to reduce risk. Although sexually troubled and sexually abusive behaviour in children can look remarkably like their adolescent counterparts, the developmental differences suggest major distinctions between the age groups. Stepping Forward recognises this difference and allows for it in its therapeutic approach. This ensures that the programme is truly tailored to individual needs.
The programme is divided in modules and based upon an integrated therapeutic approach underpinned by cognitive behaviour therapy, attachment and positive self-narrative.
